Chardham Yatra is a pilgrimage tour to four holy shrines located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. The four shrines, collectively known as the Chota Char Dham, are Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath.

The Chardham Yatra is considered one of the most sacred pilgrimages for Hindus. It is believed that undertaking this yatra can wash away all the sins of an individual and can bring them closer to attaining moksha or liberation from the cycle of birth and death.

The yatra usually begins in the month of April/May and lasts until October/November, as the shrines remain closed during the winter months due to heavy snowfall. The journey starts from the town of Haridwar, and pilgrims travel to the four shrines on foot, by mules, or by helicopters.

The Chardham Yatra is not only a spiritual journey but also a scenic one, as the four shrines are located amidst the breathtaking natural beauty of the Himalayas. It attracts millions of devotees from all over India and abroad every year.

The best time to undertake the Chardham Yatra is during the summer months from May to June and then from September to November. During these months, the weather in Uttarakhand is pleasant, and the roads leading to the four shrines are open and accessible.

During the summer months, the temperature in Uttarakhand ranges between 10°C to 30°C, making it comfortable for pilgrims to undertake the yatra. The months of September to November are also a good time to undertake the yatra as the weather is mild, and the crowds are comparatively lesser.

It is not advisable to undertake the Chardham Yatra during the monsoon season (July to August) as the region experiences heavy rainfall, which can lead to landslides and roadblocks, making the journey risky and difficult.

It is essential to check the weather and road conditions before planning the yatra to ensure a safe and comfortable journey.

There are several rules and guidelines that pilgrims need to follow while undertaking the Chardham Yatra. Some of the important rules are:

Registration: Pilgrims need to register themselves at the designated registration counters before starting the yatra. The registration is mandatory and helps the authorities keep track of the pilgrims’ movements.

Dress Code: While visiting the shrines, pilgrims need to dress appropriately, and men are required to wear traditional Indian attire. Short dresses, shorts, and sleeveless tops are not allowed in the shrines.

Photography: Photography is not allowed inside the shrines, and pilgrims are advised not to take photographs without permission.

Pollution: Pilgrims are expected to keep the surroundings clean and avoid littering. The use of plastic bags is also banned in the region.

Non-vegetarian Food: The consumption of non-vegetarian food and alcohol is strictly prohibited in the region.

Medical Fitness: Pilgrims need to ensure that they are physically and medically fit to undertake the yatra. People suffering from heart ailments, asthma, high blood pressure, and other medical conditions are advised not to undertake the yatra.

Helicopter Services: Pilgrims can opt for helicopter services to visit the shrines, but they need to adhere to the weight restrictions and baggage limitations imposed by the service providers.

It is essential to follow these rules and guidelines to ensure a safe and comfortable yatra and to respect the religious and cultural sentiments of the local people.
